Posted by Natasha Tung on
Welcome back to the Peony Patterns' Costume Party! I'm Nat from Auschick Sews blog and I can't believe it's Day 4 already! We have another beautiful collection of Halloween, Book Week, Dress Up and Cosplay costumes for you today - this time featuring Disney costumes that don't quite fit into the official "princess" category!
If you missed yesterday's projects, check out our DIY Disney Princess costumes over here!
Encanto
This Delores costume from Sara (@sarandipity_sews) is just so delightful! And can you spot Bruno, played by her dad, in the background? We love it so much!! Her daughter was so excited to see a character that looked like her and has been obsessed ever since the movie came out.
The top is Apple Berry mashed with the Wattle neckline and a self drafted flounce. Sara used the Apple Berry skirt and measured her waist to her ankle to make it a maxi. Sara used her cricut to create the design motifs.
Fabric: cotton Lycra (Purple Seamstress); custom print cotton woven (Carriage House Printery)
Lucy James @LucyinSeattle turned her flower loving daughter into Isabela Madrigal.
She used Gardenia for the bodice of the dress with a few modifications. She added a yoke to the front, along with a front neck ruffle to extend the ruffle from the back. She extended the sleeves a few sizes in length and added two sleeve ruffles. Lucy used two layers of the Cerise skirt for the circle skirts, 4 sizes larger in length, cutting down alternating sides of the skirts for the cascading look. She also made the maxi length Ivy skirt for the maxi layer, adding a snap closure for ease of wear. Due to the possible weight from beading, she suggests you source the embellishments first, especially if you’re making a smaller sized dress.
Fabric: lavender linen, beaded organza, lace appliqués, lace flowers, satin ribbon, and beads for embellishments.
Laura Hilton (@littlebonniebelle) created this gorgeous Mirabel costume for her daughter! She used the Lily bodice and extended the ruffle at the neck, with Honeysuckle for the sleeve and Jasmine as a base for the tiered skirt.
Fabric: upcycled pillowcases, cotton, yarn, hand made tassels
Toy Story
Brionna “BJ” Benson (@thesocialitesewist)'s daughter is into all things "cowboy" right now, so Jessie from Toy Story was the perfect costume for her! We love how she put this one together - with just a couple of patterns and the perfect fabric, she created a very convincing Jessie! BJ combined the Hyacinth bodice (backwards) and added the Yarrow skirt.
Fabric: cotton woven and denim (JoAnn)
Haley Hintz (@stitchedbyhaley)'s girls both chose Toy Story characters, one as Jessie, and the other as Bo Peep! Jessie was created with the Banksia pattern in shirt length, plus a ruffle. She added the Gardenia sash and fixed the straps. Honeysuckle was perfect for Bo Peep. Haley added lace trim to the bottom of the mini double skirt, and lace and ribbon to the bodice.
Fabric: Cotton, denim, lace (SAS Fabrics)
Rachel Baker @DahliaMeUp @rbaker101516 chose to turn her own Gabby into the Gabby Gabby doll from Toy Story 4!
She used the Camellia pattern with a pointed collar option and sleeveless bodice. She added a 2 inch white strip to the bottom of the bodice main to give it a faux waistband look and sewed a button tab to the centre front. She added two skirts to the dress, adding white lacy trim to the bottom.
Fabric: cotton
Frozen
You may be starting to wonder when Bec Smith (@twice_loved_creations) sleeps. We're also not sure, but she managed to make this stunning Anna dress for her daughter! We don't know how she does it all!
She used the Marigold bodice (reversed) and extended it to the same length as the honeysuckle bodice. Bec shortened the sleeves to make them more capped. The skirt was maxi length Juniper and she pleated it to fit the bodice. We also love the hand embroidered bodice!
Fabric: cotton, gold trim, pink gems (Spotlight)
Jess (@mcmamamade) wanted to create some “comfy” princess dresses to play in - and for them to wear to Frozen on Ice in a few months! She created Anna with Calendula, adding embroidery to the stretch velvet bodice. She used Wattle for Elsa, adding a V-shaped insert, gathered tulle skirt over the circle skirt, and Mistletoe embroidery to the shoulders.
Tip from Jess: To embroider on velvet, hoop some tear away stabilizer then lay the fabric overtop and secure to the stabilizer with some long running stitches so you don’t hoop the velvet and crush the nap.
Fabric: Stretch velvet, cotton jersey, power mesh Fabric Wholesale Direct; tulle (stash)
Yulia Ashirova (@berriesandpetals) created Elsa from Frozen II using Wattle with the elbow sleeve option. She altered the skirt to have a half circle instead of full, and added a slit. She recommends using french seams for the sleeves' seams if they are made of tulle.
Fabric; modal, tulle
Moana
Hannah created a Moana dress because she's her daughter's favorite princess! She used Freesia with a double gathered skirt, and attached a single belt loop and attached a single belt loop to the skirt rather than the bodice. She widened and shortened the belt, and used a lot of trims! We love how easy this dress is to put together - with the right trims and fabrics, you can easily create this costume too!
Fabric: quilting cotton, trim (JoAnn)
101 Dalmatians
Rhaina Metcalf Newborn @rhainanewborn's daughter loves a good villain, and loved everything about Cruella De Ville - except for her desire to create a coat from puppies! Rhaina used Lily, cutting the front bodice in half and using the two fabrics for the skirt - seaming them in the centre front and back.
Fabric: Cotton woven (Hobby Lobby)
Megan Todd - created this adorable Dalmatian puppy using Sage! Again, another simple to create costume - as long as you can find the perfect fabric!
Mary Poppins
Jean Bueno (@jean.b.bueno) made this fabulous Mary Poppins outfit for her daughter! She used Lantana for the main pattern, adding length to the skirt and ruffles to the bodice placket.
Fabric: lace, batiste (local store)
Minnie Mouse
Cassie Banks @threesweetpeasandme's daughter requested Minnie for her upcoming birthday trip to Disneyland! She used Camellia with two big buttons on the front, and self drafted a big bow for her hair!
Fabric: Quilters cotton (JoAnn)
Natalie Almy @elephantstrunkdesigns also created Minnie for her daughter!
Natalie mashed several patterns for her dress. She used Camellia for the bodice and pointed collar, Hyacinth sleeves, Cerise circle skirt with Camellia placket. She self drafted the sash and used the large Bluebell bow without the tails to make the bow for the mouse ears. If she had had more time, she would have sewn up Powderpuff pettiskirt with a scallop hem to go underneath her dress. Next on the to do list!
Fabric: cotton woven, stretch satin, buttons (JoAn, Hobby Lobby)
Finally, we just ADORE this beautiful Minnie Mouse from Nele De Roo (@sewstory_by_nele)! And another easy costume with no modifications! Nele used Sage for her dress & Bluebell for her bow.
Fabric: cotton (from her mom's stash!)
