Dress up your adorable Cottontail Bunny with this free tulle skirt pattern!!
Materials:
- 5/8 yard (0.50 metre) of tulle or a similar fabric
- 9” (22.9cm) of 3/8” (10mm) elastic – use coloured elastic that coordinates with the tulle being used for a fun effect!
Preparation:
- Cut 2 pieces of tulle/fabric – L X W – 11” (28cm) x 30” (76.2cm). Please note, if a shorter skirt is desired, reduce the length cut to the desired length, bearing in mind that the original length cut will be halved during construction.
- Cut 1 x 9” (22.9cm) piece of elastic
Construction:
2. Carefully fold the two pieces in half widthwise, aligning the four raw side edges. Pin/clip in place along the raw side edges.
3. Sew through all four layers of tulle/fabric to attach, along the raw side edges using a 1/4” (6mm) seam allowance, creating a continuous loop of tulle/fabric. Ensure to backstitch at each end.
4. Finger press the seam allowance to one side. Carefully fold the loop of tulle/fabric in half lengthwise, aligning the four long raw edges along the bottom, and enclosing the side seam just sewn. Ensure to match the side seams along the side just sewn.
5. Ensure that the long, folded edge is at the top and that there are no unwanted creases/folds along the folded edge. Pin/clip along the top folded edge first, followed by the raw bottom edges, to hold the tulle/fabric in the correct position.
6. Using a 1/2” (1.3cm) seam allowqnce, topstitch around the top folded edge of the skirt, leaving a 1” (2.5cm) opening for threading elastic through in the next step. Whilst sewing, regularly check to make sure that the two folds along the top edge are nested together at the very top to ensure that the size of the casing is accurate. Remember to backstitch at each end. This will create the casing for the elastic waistband.
7. Insert a safety pin (or use a bodkin) and thread the elastic through the casing opening by sliding the elastic through the middle of the four layers of tulle/fabric.
8. Continue to thread the elastic through the casing, ensuring to check that the elastic has not become twisted. Overlap the ends of the elastic by 1/2” (1.3cm) and sew together using a zig zag stitch.Tip: Use a small piece of hem tape to secure the elastic ends together to help in preventing them shifting whilst sewing.
9. Stretch the waistband out slightly to allow the elastic to move inside the casing. Sew the 1” (2.5cm) opening closed, ensuring to backstitch at each end.
10. Remove the pins/clips from along the raw bottom edges. Stretch out the waistband to allow the elastic to be distributed evenly within the casing. The seam can be placed on the side or along the centre back, it is purely personal preference!
